Transport Canberra and City Services is responsible for the installation and upkeep of barbecues in many of Canberra's high use town and district parks. These barbecues, most of which are electric and constructed from brick with a stainless steel top, are available to be used free of charge. While barbecue facilities vary depending on location, they are generally located near seats, tables, bins and a tap for convenience. Click here to see the Operational Status of BBQ locations. BBQs are open for free public use on a first come first served basis. All BBQs should NOT be used during a total fire ban. To request maintenance or report a faulty barbecue please complete the Fix My Street form or online feedback form.
How to Use BBQs
Electric Cooktop BBQ's are designed to function automatically without further operator input after the initial start. Temperatures and times are automatically set. All ACT public BBQs work on a 1st come 1st served basis unless the parkland is closed for a event via the Public Land Use Team. 1. To commence operation, press and hold the START/STOP button for at least 6 seconds 2. The appliance will enter a pre-heat cycle, indicated by an audible beep and/or a flashing light of the START/STOP button (different BBQS will flash different colours red or green). The button will flash faster as the appliance heats up. 3. Upon successful completion of the pre-heat cycle and achieving the automatic target temperature (usually 3-7 minutes, depending on the ambient temperature) the appliance will enter Cooking Mode and the 20-minute cooking cycle will commence (Most BBQ's are 20 minutes unless otherwise stated). 4. When the Cooking Mode commences an audible beep will be heard and the START/STOP button will change from fast flashing light to a static green light. During Cooking Mode, the element will automatically turn on and off to maintain the target hotplate temperature. After approximately 20 minutes an audible beep will be heard and the appliance will switch off automatically. 5. The Cooktop can be switched off manually by pressing and holding the START/STOP button for 3 seconds. HOT TIP - You may want to lay some aluminium foil down on the cooktop to reduce clean up, when the BBQ has cooled down it is easier to remove the alfoil and clean the remaining residue.
